Grabbing a rental car in Paris and driving out to Reims and Epernay to taste champagne is the perfect luxury nomad lifestyle activity. Our 4 day itinerary is a great way to get ideas on how to get out of Paris and get some countryside French luxury.
Itinerary
Day 1: Renting a car in Paris and driving to Reims – Our journey to explore the Champagne region of France began with renting a car in Paris. We picked up the car from the rental agency near the airport and started the drive towards Reims around 9am. The drive was smooth and scenic, passing through the picturesque countryside and small villages along the way. Discover Cars was a great option.
Day 2: Taittinger Champagne House was our first stop in the Champagne region. The drive to the house was beautiful, passing through the vineyards that produce the grapes used in their champagne. We were excited to explore this iconic champagne house and taste some of their wines not available outside France.
The Taittinger Champagne House was a stunning location with its elegant architecture and beautiful gardens. The tour of the cellars was and fascinating, and there are miles (kilometers) of caves where the champagne is aged. The caves were used during the wars as place where residence could hide from the attacks and travel safely underground. The champagne tasting included a selection of different styles that your were offered to choose from with different price points, and you are able to sample some of the best champagnes produced by Taittinger. We choose 2 different tastings and were able to share, but the highlight was trying the vintages not available outside France.
Day 3: De Venoge Champagne House – Our next stop was the De Venoge Champagne House, located in the heart of Epernay. The drive to Epernay was pleasant, with beautiful scenery and charming small towns along the way.
The De Venoge Champagne House was a historic location with a rich history of producing high-quality champagnes. The history of this wine is amazing, and the bottle is a work of art. Designed like a decanter because the founder of the champagne house wanted to serve his champagne in a decanter with dinner but pouring the champagne into a decanter resulted in the sparkling wine foaming out of the decanter. THe solution was to create a bottle with the shape of the decanter to age the champagne in. You have to option to taste most of their wines and take every chance – these were the favorite champagnes we tasted.
Day 4: Perrier-Jouët Champagne House – Our final stop was the Perrier-Jouët Champagne House, located in the picturesque town of Hautvillers. The drive to Hautvillers was breathtaking, with stunning views of the vineyards and rolling hills.
The Perrier-Jouët Champagne House was a beautiful location with its grand architecture and stunning gardens. The tour was informative and gave me an insight into the unique production process used by Perrier-Jouët. The champagne tasting was a highlight, with the opportunity to sample some of their most famous champagnes.
Overall, our trip to the Champagne region of France was a fantastic experience, and renting a car to explore the region was the perfect way to see everything it had to offer. The combination of beautiful scenery, rich history, and delicious champagne made it an unforgettable journey.
